  • Define "big guns".

  • thanks what is it like shotting the 50?

  • Lindsay - I don't see a problem with me seeking clarification what the OP thinks are big guns so there's no need for your "give the kid a break" comment. Big guns are a subjective term. He might think 12.7mm are big but I think 3 or 5 inch to be big. There are also no ships in the RAN with a 76mm gun on the FX.

Lachie - The 50 cal BMG is a very old design and are all mounted on tripods bolted to the deck. It's not built for accuracy and is a very loud gun to operate. I don't use it though have handled it before. Handled in a non-firing mode. I found it to be heavy and cumbersome. Most people use their body weight to counter the recoil as you can see in the many photos of sailors operating it. I'll leave it to other BMs here to tell you what it's like when firing.

  • are yous in the RAN?

  • Hi Lachie, my Daughter recently joined up and is currently at Cat School training as a Bosun's Mate, the weaponry side of things is amazing according to her and she loves it, although its only training at the moment she does get to fire everything up to the .50 cal.

  • AWESOME That must be fun

  • Hi Lachie,

Submarines don’t participate in boarding operations, we contribute other skills to the defence of Australia. But I have heard from my friends that it is very exciting and rewarding.

  • I'm joining the australian navy

But I'm tossing up between a bm and a electrical tech on a sub

Would be good if I can get a little bit more info about both jobs

  • Hi my son has an assessment coming up for Australian Navy as a Boatswains mate can anyone give me information on where the training is? And after training where would he be based?

  • hello,

does anyone know how long the waiting list (if there is one) is to become a Boatswain mate?

    thanks Kylie

  • Hey can anyone that is an ex boatswains mate give me a run down of what the job really involves have read on a lot of different pages and some claim that what the defence site says it is isn't quite correct so I'd really like to hear it from an ex sailors point of view as I'm looking to join the navy and would really like some solid responses.

    Thanks!
